DIRECTV is a California based direct-broadcast broadcaster and satellite service provider. Originally launched as a satellite service in 1994, the company now offers an array of local and nationwide channels via its digital satellite service. In addition to offering video and audio services in United States, the company also delivers local content to Latin American and Caribbean audiences. The service was acquired by AT&T in mid-2015 for a hefty sum of $48.5 billion.

DIRECTV offers a number of advantages over its competitors (such as Dish Network, Comcast and local cable services). For instance, it can help you to connect up to 8 TVs to one HD DVR, reverse time and watch shows aired within the last 3 days (without the need to record them), binge watch your favorite shows episodes back-to-back automatically, access 200+ channels in full HD (including HBO, ShowTime, Cinemax, Audience, Starz, A&E, ABC, AMC, BBC World News, CBS, Cartoon Network, CNN, CNBC, CWTV, Disney, Fox network channels, MTV, National Geographic, NBC, Nickelodeon, Oxygen, Syfy, TruTV, TNT, TBS, VH1, USA Network and a whole lot more); watch up to 8 NFL games at once and even get access to NFL Sunday Ticket. The service is available on almost all devices including iPhones, iPads, Android based Smartphones and tablets, Smart TVs, Desktops, laptops and even gaming consoles through its website and an array of native apps and services including DIRECTV Everywhere and DIRECTV Cinema.

While subscribing to DIRECTV is a great way to watch your favorite content, the service is currently not available outside United States. When you try to access it from an overseas location, you are going to see the following error message instead of your favorite movie or TV show:

“DIRECTV-is-not-available outside-the-United-States. We-look-forward-to entertaining-you-when-you’re-back.”

This is indeed a bad news for American expats and business travelers since DIRECTV offers a wealth of content at the touch of a button. Since DIRECTV is not a content creator, it has to adhere to the rules laid out by its partner channels. Most American content providers do not broadcast their shows internationally on their own but instead rely on subsidiaries or tie-ups to distribute content worldwide.

To enforce location based restrictions, DIRECTV checks the IP address of all its visitors. Viewers having an American IP address are allowed to access their favorite content while those with a non-US IP are redirected to the error page. This also means that it is possible to bypass DIRECTV’s restrictions by using IP and DNS changing solutions like VPNs and SmartDNS services.

How To Unlock DIRECTV Outside US?

Step 1: Subscribe to a VPN or SmartDNS service having servers in United States. Here are some really great service providers that can help to unblock DIRECTV:

Step 2: Download and install the VPN Program supplied by your service provider. Not all service providers provide an installable file so you may have to configure the service manually by following the instructions supplied by your provider. The configuration involves tweaking the network settings of your computer or mobile device by creating a new VPN connection.

Step 3: Save and apply the configuration changes and reboot the device if required. The reboot is usually not required for mobile devices and you can start using the VPN immediately after applying the changes.

Step 4: Connect to the VPN/SmartDNS service by clicking/tapping on its icon. Depending on your internet speed and location, it could take a few minutes for the service to establish a connection with the VPN server.

Step 5: This step is only needed if you have used the installable setup program supplied by your service provider. After the connection is established, make sure to check the location of the IP address supplied to you by your VPN provider. Since many VPN companies are based outside America, it is entirely possible that you may get a non-US IP address upon connection. If this happens, simply switch to a US VPN server manually by choosing a US VPN server from the list of available servers.

Step 6: Connect to DIRECTV (through browser/app) after changing your IP address. If you are unable to watch your favorite show for some reason, simply close the browser/DIRECTV app, clear the cache and restart the browser/app again. Since you now have a US based IP address, DIRECTV would allow you to stream your favorite content without showing any location related error messages.
