SurfEasy VPN Review – Total Security For Everyone

Saturday, June 21st, 2014

SurfEasy is a security and privacy solution that has been around for few years. Founded in 2011, the service was brought into the market by SurfEasy Inc. which is a Canada based company. In this exhaustive SurfEasy VPN Review, we will review the features offered by the service and decide if it is worth subscribing.

Server Location and Site Access

SurfEasy has deployed its VPN gateways in 4 different countries including United States, United Kingdom, Singapore and Brazil. The service is tailor-made for expats and tourists from these 4 locations since it allows customers to unblock premium On-Demand sites like Netflix, BBC iPlayer, Rdio, Demand 5, Pandora, Mio TV, Sky Go, Claro TV, HBO Go, Amazon Prime, Eurosport, Rara, Lovefilm, All TV, 4OD, UK TV, Xfinity, Vevo, NHL, iTV, FOX, Hulu, CWTV, USA Network, STV, Vudu, TNT, NBC, MLB, MTV and CBS from any location in the world. In addition, the privacy service can be used to circumvent the firewalls and censorship measures deployed by organizations and governments of China, Saudi Arabia, UAE and Brazil and access frequently blocked sites like Twitter, GTalk, Facebook, Gmail, Viber, YouTube and Skype from anywhere. Customers who want to access local content from both UK and US would be pleased to learn that the company allows unlimited server-switching within its network so you would be able to unlock premium services from all 4 countries with just one VPN account.

Speed and Bandwidth

SurfEasy does not restrict speed or bandwidth for its paid users. The company’s support staff manages its infrastructure round the clock so you would be able to experience ultra fast speeds for streaming, VOIP, downloading and gaming. On the down side, the company doesn’t permit bittorrenting activities since it can’t comply with DMCA requests without logging traffic.

Privacy Settings

SurfEasy uses the same level of encryption that is used by many banks, Fortune 500 companies and government departments to protect data. The service is ideal for protecting private data passing through unsecured Wi-Fi networks as well as for securing emailing, browsing, VOIP and messaging sessions from surveillance and snooping.

SurfEasy manages a no-log network. The company doesn’t keep a record of the sites that you visit, your IP address or the files that you download. However, the company keeps track of bandwidth consumed and it may also reveal subscriber details to third parties in order to comply with court orders.

Supported Systems

SurfEasy is available for Windows (XP, Vista, 7, 8), Mac OS X (10.6+), iOS (for iPhones and iPads, iOS version 6 or later) and Android (4.0 or later). The company offers its own VPN client so you don’t need to tweak any settings manually. The service can be used to protect up to 5 devices simultaneously.

SurfEasy also offers a USB based Private Browsing solution for Windows and Mac systems that can be plugged and used from anywhere. The Private Browser solution allows you to secure your activities from shared computers and Wi-Fi hotspots and it can even be used on those systems where you don’t have administrator rights. The solution comes with many powerful security features such as on-screen keyboard, password manager, do not track option, total password security plus it even allows you to carry your web history and login credentials with you everywhere. The Private Browser USB stick cannot be used for any other purpose and it secures your personal details with a master password.

Customer Support

SurfEasy offers support through phone, email and live chat. The support is available from 9AM – 5PM on weekdays and 10AM – 5PM on weekends. Apart from contacting the support staff, it is possible to resolve errors by looking at the troubleshooting instructions available on the company’s website.

Pricing Options

SurfEasy offers a free VPN plan (Starter VPN) that provides 500 MB of bandwidth per month. It is possible to win bandwidth by referring the service to others as well as by following the company’s twitter handle. If you need more bandwidth then you can upgrade to Total or Mobile VPN plans. The Total plan can be used from desktops as well as mobile devices and is available for $4.99 /month ($49.99 per year). The mobile VPN plan can be used from one device at a time (iOS or Android) and costs $2.99 /month ($29.99 per year). The USB based Private Browser solution is available for a one- time payment of $69.99.

Final Verdict

On the whole, SurfEasy offers a solid VPN service. While the company still does not have VPN gateways in many important VPN markets (Canada, Europe), it offers bank level encryption and security to web users. If you are looking for a totally secure way of protecting your online activities and privacy on the internet, test drive the SurfEasy VPN solution today. I use SurfEasy regularly and I have to admit that it is a pretty straight forward service at a very reasonable price.

The setup process is very easy. All you have to do is install the software and it does all the rest for you.

The monthly service for $4.99/mo is a great option for those whom have multiple devices. It allows you to connect up to 5 devices simultaneously without any data restrictions. At $4.99/mo, that’s a price you’ll be hard-pressed to find any where else.

The USB stick is also a nice option but is probably more suited for individuals whom will only use the service for one device at a time, since you have to plug it in for it to function. Also, it doesn’t appear to have the capability of plugging directly into a cell-phone just yet, so if you’re looking to secure your mobile devices as well as your home computers, the monthly service is still a better option.
