RTE Player (rte.ie/player) is a video on demand service from Raidió Teilifís Éireann. The service offers an excellent collection of entertainment shows, news, sporting events plus local and international programs from RTÉ News Now, RTÉ One and RTÉ Two channels. The service is available for computers, iPads, iPhones, Android Smartphones/tablets and gaming consoles through its website and native apps.

RTE Player delivers more than 200 hours of videos from programs collected from different RTE channels. The service offers full episodes of popular shows like The Family Project, iWitness, The Works, Prime Time, The Late Late Show, The Sunday Game, One News, Bloom, Feargal Quinn’s Retail Therapy, Morning Edition, Other Voices and The Saturday Night Show. Most programs are available on the RTE Player within 7 days after their official TV broadcast date.

RTE Player is available in two versions – RTE Player Ireland and RTE Player International. The Irish version of RTE Player offers a much better choice of content but it is available only inside Ireland. The International version is the default version available to international audience but it doesn’t offer many popular programs.

RTE checks the IP address of visitors to determine their location. If the IP address is from Ireland then the visitors are allowed to access Irish version of the website. On the other hand, if the IP address is from any other country then the user is redirected to the International version of the website. Needless to say, this redirecting can prove incredibly frustrating for Irish expats and tourists since they are not able to access their favorite RTE shows from abroad.

Since the visitor redirection is based on IP address, it is possible to access Irish version of RTE Player by changing your IP to an Irish IP address. There are several IP changing services like proxies and Virtual private networks that allow you to change your IP address with the click of a button.

For unlocking video streaming services, VPNs are preferred over proxies. That’s because proxies are slow plus a lot of them leak true IP address which means you won’t be able to use them to unlock location restricted services. VPNs deliver very high level of anonymity and blazing fast speeds so they are just perfect for unlocking streaming services like RTE Player.

How To Unlock RTE Player Shows Outside Ireland With A VPN

Step 1:  Subscribe to a VPN service that provides Irish IP address. To unlock RTE Player, we advise choosing from Express VPNPureVPN, StrongVPN, HideMyAssBanana VPNOverplay, and IPVanish due to the fact that these VPN providers provide very high streaming and buffering speeds at an affordable price.

Step 2:  Download the VPN client from the VPN provider’s site and install it or configure the VPN by modifying your network settings. With regards to handheld mobile devices like Smartphones and tablets, there is usually no software installation necessary but you do need to set up the virtual private network by adding some network parameters.

Step 3: When the VPN client installation and configuration is complete, save and apply the changes. You might also have to reboot your machine for network configuration changes to take effect. For mobile devices, just save and apply the changes and restart the app to use the new network settings.

Step 4: Connect to the newly set up service by clicking on the Connect option or the VPN icon. Depending on your internet speed and present location, it could take a few moments for the VPN to pick up the default server.

Step 5:  Search for Irish VPN server in case you are not connected to Ireland server by default. Most VPN providers have servers in several nations which means you would need to select a server from Ireland manually to unlock RTE Player.

Step 6:  Connect to the RTE Player website and click on program titles to check if you can watch them without facing any bottlenecks. To unlock RTE Player through handheld mobile devices, close the RTE Player app and start it again. Should you experience any issue, don’t hesitate to contact your VPN provider to get it resolved. You are now free to enjoy RTE Player programs from any region in the world.

I have HMA but no joy with viewing the video on rte. I was trying to do a live stream of a worldcup game. I clicked the rte player link from rte.ie and was directed to here: http://www.rte.ie/player/99/ (not sure what the 99 is I usually get this address http://www.rte.ie/player/nz/ as I am in new zealand)and there was no option of any world cup game so i went here http://www.rte.ie/player/ie/ and could see a link for the live world cup game i wanted. On clicking the link the page will load up as expected except there is no video loaded, there is no option to press play. So I can’t get to watch the live stream that I want.

Any way around this? Is this some flash issue? I tried it on FF and Chrome. Appreciate any advice.tks
