Xbox 360 is an extremely popular gaming console from Microsoft that was launched in 2005. The console is the successor to Xbox and it competes directly with Playstation 3 and Nintendo Wii. One of the major plus points of Xbox 360 is that it comes bundled with the Xbox Live service that allows gamers to download and rent games, TV shows, movies, music, game demos, trailers; play multiplayer games on the internet as well as stream third party services like Netflix and Hulu.

Need For A VPN For Xbox 360

Although Xbox Live has opened unlimited possibilities for gamers, the service is not accessible from all over the world. A lot of game demos, DLC and Xbox Live content is available only to gamers from certain countries (most notably US, UK and Japan). Moreover, a lot of gaming sites check the location of the gamers through their IP address and only allow gamers from certain locations to participate in multiplayer online gaming. Not to mention, a lot of online streaming services like Netflix, Hulu and Lovefilm can be accessed only from specific locations so you would not be able to enjoy them on your Xbox 360 if you happen to be located outside those areas.

If you want to enjoy the full power of XBox Live, access multiplayer sites as well as access stream third party services on your Xbox then you must use a secure IP changing solution like a Virtual Private Network. Although proxies can also help you to change IP address, they are not able to deliver high speeds required for online gaming and streaming so using a VPN is definitely recommended as far as unlocking the full potential of your Xbox 360 is concerned. In addition, using a VPN will encrypt your personal data and IP address and protect you from DDOS attacks and “Doxers”.

How To Setup VPN For Xbox 360

Since it is not possible to setup a VPN on Xbox 360, you need to configure the VPN service on a computer or router and then share it with your Xbox. In this tutorial, we will show how to create a PPTP VPN connection on a Windows 7 machine and then share it with Xbox 360.

Step 4: Next, you must specify how the VPN connection should make a connection to the internet. Click the “Use my Internet Connection” option in order to use your existing internet connection. [Refer to image Image 4]

Step 5: Type the URL or IP address of the VPN server that you wish to use as your VPN server in the “Internet Address” text box. This information is usually available at the “Member’s Area” section of your VPN provider’s site. Next, specify an easy to remember connection name (for example, provider name plus server city) in the “Destination Name” input box and click on the “Allow other people to use this connection” checkbox if you want to share the connection with other people. Click on the Next button when you are done. [Refer to image Image 5]

Step 6: Type your VPN login credentials in the “username” and “password” input box. Step 9: Next, click on the Networking tab and deselect “Internet Protocol Version 6” and “File and Printer Sharing” options. Then select the “Internet Protocol Version 4” option and click on the Properties button. Usually there is no need to change the DNS settings but if you are not able to unlock GEO-IP restricted sites even with a VPN then you may have to specify the IP address of the server in the “Use following DNS Server” input box. Click on the OK button to save the DNS settings. [Refer to images Image 9, Image 9a]

Step 10: In the sharing tab, click on the checkbox next to “Allow other network users to connect through this computer’s Internet connection” and then select “Local Area Connection” in the Home networking connection dropdown box. [Refer to Image 10]

Step 11: Click on OK button to save the changes.

Make sure to choose “Public Network” from the list of location options. As soon as your username and password is verified, you are ready to use the service. Remember to test the connection from your Xbox by selecting “Test Network Connection” option. You are now ready to use your Xbox 360 at its full potential.
