Air travelers are always on the lookout for cheaper airfares and affordable travel deals. Some of the most common methods of saving money on air journey include spending hours researching ticket prices, signing up for price alerts, booking tickets weeks or months in advance or even travelling during the middle of the week or at unearthly hours. But the above methods are not only time consuming, they also do not guarantee lowest air prices. However, there is a far easier way of saving money on air travel that many people are not aware of which is the focus of this article.

Not many air travelers (not even those who travel frequently) are aware of the fact that the prices of air tickets are different for customers of different countries. For instance, if a Delta Airlines ticket from New York to Los Angeles costs $350 for American customers on a travel portal, the same ticket may cost significantly less for customers from Canada or Europe on the same website. Apart from lower ticket prices, the overseas customers can also take advantage of currency conversion and save money by paying in a different currency.

In order to use this technique and save money while booking air tickets, you need to understand how the travel websites function and how they display ticket prices to customers. Most travel portals rely on IP address, which is a series of random numbers assigned to your Smartphone/computer by your Internet Service Provider (ISP) and which contains information about your current country and city, to determine your location and show ticket prices to you. The good news is that it is possible to mask your real IP address and get an IP address from another country by using services like proxies and Virtual Private Networks (VPNs). Proxies are not really recommended for using this technique since they do not offer adequate anonymity or security but VPNs are tailor made for such tasks.

How To Save Money On Air Tickets With A VPN

1) Subscribe to a VPN provider that has servers in multiple countries. Most big VPN companies such as HideMyAss, IPVanish, VyprVPN, ExpressVPN, SwitchVPN etc. have servers in many European, American and Asian countries so it becomes possible to do lots of price comparisons and get cheapest possible air tickets.

It is worth mentioning here that most VPN services are not free so you would need to spend few dollars to use this technique. However, the subscription price would be easily offset by the savings that you make while booking air tickets. And while it is possible to use this method for free by taking advantage of the free trials and money back guarantees offered by the VPN providers, it is recommended to subscribe to a reliable VPN service if you are travelling abroad or need to book tickets frequently. Besides allowing you to save money on your air tickets, the VPN service will also shield you from all kinds of hacking threats, surveillance and censorship and allow you to access your favorite streaming, banking and ecommerce websites even from overseas locations.

2) The first step is to check the ticket price for the desired journey on your favorite travel portal without using a VPN. It also makes sense to check the prices on multiple travel websites (such as Kayak.com, Orbitz.com, Travelocity.com, Hipmunk.com, Dohop.com etc.) so as to get an idea about the prevailing ticket prices.

3) Close the browser and clear the cookies. Switch on the VPN service and choose an IP address from a different country. For instance, if you are from US then you can choose an IP address from Canada or UK and check the ticket prices by visiting the travel portal(s) again. It is highly recommended to check the ticket prices from at least 3-5 different locations (remember to clear the cookies before using a new IP address) so that you do not miss out on special deals. Once you locate a great deal, book the ticket from the same country and IP address to take advantage of the lower price. And while it may take some time to find a good deal when you are using this trick for the first time, you can locate great deals in no time once you are used to this technique.
